Dorsey dangles the Apple carrot for Twitter devs

How do you make amends with a development community after taking away some of their tools and rendering at least a few of their products unusable? Try offering them the keys to a much bigger kingdom, for starters: namely, the sizeable pool of iOS device owners.

Photos of Headphone Jack from White Fifth-Generation iPod Touch

Back in July, word surfaced that Apple might be planning to release a white version of its iPod touch for the first time later this year. Several photos of white front plates for the iPod touch have surfaced since that time, although there have been suggestions that these plates were either knockoff parts or for a white version of the current-generation model that was never released.

Japanese site Macotakara has now spotted a white headphone jack claimed to be for the fifth-generation iPod touch being offered by Chinese repair site Luna Commerce (via AppleInsider). The jack sports the same slanted profile as found in the current iPod touch, necessary to fit the device's tapered design.

Headphone jack parts for the iPhone 5 or 4S appeared in both black and white back in mid-August, with those parts carrying the flat profile needed for the current iPhone 4 design. A tapered iPhone 5 as has been rumored would presumably require a slanted headphone jack, leading to speculation that the flat parts are intended for the cheaper iPhone 4-based model informally known as the iPhone 4S.

Samsung will 'never' license webOS

Samsung will "never" license or buy webOS from HP, CEO Choi Gee Sung explained at IFA on Friday. Shooting down rumors of a buyout, he told the media that the company instead preferred to pour effort into its Bada smartphones and was working to improve the OS "harder than outside people think." He told Pocket-lint and others in attendance that he saw phone builders moving too quickly get access to another OS, likely alluding to Nokia's licensing Windows Phone....

TechCrunch reveals the Amazon Kindle Tablet

TechCrunch's MG Siegler got an exclusive look at Amazon's Kindle Tablet, and by the sounds of things, the iPad may finally have its first credible competitor. The first thing Amazon got right was the price: US$250 for a device with a 7-inch, full-color display. Other manufacturers have priced their tablets similarly to the iPad, and consumer response has been... "lukewarm" is about as charitably as I can describe it.

Amazon's Kindle Tablet is similar in appearance to the BlackBerry PlayBook and has a capacitive, multi-touch screen based on traditional backlit LCD technology rather than e-ink. Siegler believes the 7-inch version runs on a single-core chip, but a forthcoming 10-inch model may have a dual-core CPU. Initially only Wi-Fi models will be offered, but Amazon may introduce 3G-enabled models once it works out deals with carriers.

Siegler believes the device has only 6 GB of onboard storage -- likely a major factor in its low price -- but deep integration with Amazon's online services may go a long way toward rectifying the relatively low storage. (My colleagues point out that 6 GB of storage is more than enough for books, but for a device intended for multimedia use 6 GB isn't a whole lot to play with.) Allegedly the device's storage will be expandable via SD cards, but Siegler was unable to locate a slot for one on his preview unit.

The device has no camera and no physical buttons on its forward-facing surface. Amazon is targeting a late November launch for the 7-inch version, and a larger 10-inch model may follow in 2012.

By far the most intriguing feature of Amazon's Kindle Tablet is that, according to Siegler, the device runs a completely forked version of Android. All of the services available on the tablet are Amazon's own -- there was no trace of Google's apps or Marketplace. The tablet's UI is Amazon's own version of Android, and while built on a version of Android's OS, Amazon intends to pursue its own path for software updates rather than going alongside Android's dessert-themed updates.

"They are not working with Google on this. At all," Siegler says. 5000 points awarded to our own Richard Gaywood, who predicted Amazon would go down this forked path several months ago.

The low price (half the cost of an entry-level iPad) and integration with Amazon's services may make this the first truly successful Android-based tablet on the marketplace. Its form factor, price, and intended use put it in direct competition with Barnes and Noble's Nook Color, which may mean hard times ahead for that device. If Amazon subsequently releases a 10-inch device at a price comparable to or lower than the iPad's, that plus the smaller 7-inch model may mean that Apple will finally have its first serious competition in the tablet market.

Makayama making a movie mount for iPad 2

The Makayama Movie Mount is a tripod-mountable case for the iPad 2, designed to set up your Apple tablet for an extended amount of movie shooting. The mount clips right around the iPad, and it also has two hotshoes for things like lights or microphones, a screw fitting for a place to mount a lens converter, and a kickstand on the back to hold the iPad up as usual. Makayama has also made a free app for the iPad that allows you to control the finer aspects of shooting, with both video and photography.

I'm not sure why, if you want to go to these lengths, you'd use the iPad specifically for shooting video. Why not just invest in a real camera? Still, if you already own the iPad 2 and wouldn't mind doing your shooting, editing, and uploading of video all on the same device, this might be just the thing. The Movie Mount is going on sale in October, and it will be available for $69.95 in the US.

Daily Mac App: Rail Maze

If you want a time-wasting game for the Mac, consider Rail Maze. It's a free download from the Mac App Store that offers more than 100 puzzles. In fact, Rail Maze is a combination puzzle/action game, and the various levels highlight either a puzzle to solve or action to navigate. The puzzle game has you solving progressively harder obstacles as you navigate your train from one station to the next. The action levels are a railroad version of Pac Man, in that you must catch stars before a pirate train catches you.

The game is pretty fun, and it's currently one of the top downloads in the Mac App Store. It's also a great game for kids with catchy graphics and puzzles that are difficult, but not impossible. There's a few ads to deal with, but they don't intrude on game play. You also can share your scores to an online scoreboard, Twitter or Facebook.

10.7: View Calculator results in large type

Right click on the display in Calculator.app and select 'Large Type.' An overlay appears with the number in large type so you can see it easily. Simple, but cool.

This works in the Lion version of Calculator.app. I don't know if it was there in earlier versions. It works just like the 'Show Large Type' feature for phone numbers in Address Book.

Here's some bonus Calculator.app trivia: Mac OS X 10.7's Calculator has 16 help pages.

[crarko adds: Also, when you right-click in Calculator the same pop-up menu gives you the option to change over to RPN if you prefer. I tried it in Snow Leopard and it's not there. It's always a nice touch when the older applications get some improvement.]
