PoorMan's Lockscreen
Although there are nice apps that display calendar events and to-dos on a jailbroken iPhone lockscreen, those of us who aren't jailbroken lack a feature that, in my opinion, is a huge oversight. If you're like me and not good at checking your to-dos and calendar regularly, you may find this helpful albeit not terribly elegant.
You will need an 'always on' computer somewhere that can act as a server. I am running Snow Leopard on mine. Then you need a Unix application that runs in terminal called icalBuddy. This command can extract events and to-dos from iCal. See the instructions for icalBuddy as it is very customizable. I use icalBuddy to extract the next two days of events from specific calendars.
Next create a workflow in Automator, and save it as an application. You can use icalBuddy to get your to-dos in addition to events, but Automator is pretty good at getting to-dos on its own, so thats's what I use.

A few apps on sale for St. Patrick's Day
Erin go bragh-se the App Store today, because there are a few cheap games out there for the holiday!
- Real-time strategy/action mashup Legendary Wars (as seen back at Macworld) is on sale for just 99 cents.
- Stoneship (another Daily App choice) is also on sale for just 99 cents, as is the award-winning Osmos.
- Comixology has a few Green Lantern and Green Arrow comics on sale for just a buck each -- good deal if you've got a new iPad 2 to read them on.
- EA (surprise!) has games back on sale, including Scrabble, Tetris and its MMA title.
- Lifelike Cards HD is also on sale for just a buck.
Putting apps on sale for holidays seems to be the growing tradition on the App Store, so there are probably a few more out there (and I'll bet a few developers will start up their sales this weekend after seeing these out this week). iPhone 5 again rumored to have NFC
It's a game of rumor volleying when it comes to the iPhone 5 and Near Field Communication. Early rumors suggested the iPhone 5 would include NFC technology, but recent information from UK-based The Independent hinted Apple would launch its own NFC-based payment system with the iPhone 6. Now that we have adapted to the idea of an NFC-less iPhone 5, Forbes has charged in with another rumor that places NFC back in the upcoming smartphone.
The source of this rumor is a friend of an entrepreneur who is working with Apple on a "top secret" NFC product. The unnamed individual believes the fruits of the friend's labor will debut in the iPhone 5. The source also claims manufacturers of NFC readers are preparing for a deluge of business when the iPhone 5 hits this summer.
While the possibility of NFC is exciting, the Forbes report is based on second-hand information and cannot be corroborated. Yes, it is possible the iPhone 5 will include an NFC mobile payment system, but it is not a guarantee by any stretch of the imagination. Sit tight and wait for the iPhone 5 rumor mill to kick into overdrive in the next few months before you start investing in VeriFone and other NFC makers.

Nokia software updater for Mac beta is available
Good news for those with a Nokia handset and a Mac as Nokia has finally released its software updater for Mac. This software tool lets you update with your handset using your Mac desktop or laptop. Right now, the tool only works with the operating system, but future releases will add support for applications. The tool is a release candidate and still under development, so expect it to be rough around the edges. Thus far, no issues have been reported, so you should be clear to use the tool if you own a Nokia smartphone. You can point your browser to the Nokia Beta Labs website for additional information and to download the software updater.

TUAW's Daily App: Lane Splitter
You may never have actually experienced this, but here in Los Angeles, every time we head out on the freeways, we face a dreaded threat: the motorcyclist. Not that I actually have anything against these guys (I'm sure they're very nice), but in LA, I've found that they tend to have a set of rules outside of the normal traffic -- even when you're parked on the 405 at a standstill thanks to a traffic jam, the guys on motorcycles are somehow able to split lanes, flying down the dotted line in between two long backups of cars.
And that's what Lane Splitter is all about -- you play a motorcyclist rushing down a freeway, cutting in between various cars as you speed on. It's generally a Canabalt-style running game, but using the accelerometer to steer provides a fun driving twist to the game, and pulling a wheelie on your motorcycle can add up some extra points as well.
Unfortunately, there's no Game Center integration, though there are global leaderboards, and an update is promised in the future (though it hasn't shown up since December). But Lane Splitter has another bonus going for it on this Friday: it's currently completely free for both iPad and iPhone. If you're down to do some traffic weaving this weekend, give it a look.
