Apple accuses Motorola, Samsung of monopolizing markets with patents

In its patent disputes with Samsung and Motorola Mobility, Apple is again calling attention to its competitors' use of "F/RAND encumbered" patents that have been declared essential to implementing open standards, noting that both companies are deceptively monopolizing markets to "harm or eliminate competition."

Tim Cook reportedly responding to customer emails

We'll miss a lot of things about Steve Jobs being at Apple in the CEO position, but one loss will be his tendency to answer all kinds of customer emails in person, no matter what the topic (or time of day). There's hope, though: MacRumors has our first reported "TimMail," in which new CEO Tim Cook has taken the time out to personally answer a customer emailing him congrats about his new promotion.

You can see it in the image above -- like Steve, Tim seems to be a man of few words who uses them well. The "War Eagle" cry is a reference to Cook's alma mater, Auburn University, where apparently he remains a fan. Good to see that Cook is apparently continuing the tradition of answering emails as CEO -- we'll have to see how he reacts when the messages go from simple congratulations to issues that might be a little tougher to deal with.

U.S. Government Moving to Block AT&T's Acquisition of T-Mobile

Bloomberg reports that the U.S. government filed a complaint today seeking a court order to block AT&T's acquisition of T-Mobile. Antitrust concerns are at the heart of the complaint:
AT&T?s elimination of T-Mobile as an independent, low- priced rival would remove a significant competitive force from the market.
AT&T first announced its intent to acquire T-Mobile in March, stating that the merger would increase the company's network quality and expand the reach of its LTE capabilities.

AT&T was the only carrier offering the iPhone in the U.S. from its release in 2007 until its exclusive agreement ended earlier this year when Verizon began offering the iPhone 4 in February.

Although T-Mobile has never been an official iPhone carrier in the U.S., the company claimed that over one million iPhones were running on its network earlier this summer. Just last week there were reports that T-Mobile USA would begin offering the iPhone 5 at its release, which is widely expected in October.

Elgato EyeTV Mobile streams live TV to iPads

Elgato, makers of the EyeTV line of accessories, has announced EyeTV Mobile for the iPad 2. Consisting of a dock connector dongle with a built-in TV antenna, the accessory will allow iPad 2 owners to watch live TV anywhere via a forthcoming EyeTV Mobile app on the App Store.

The accessory and app replicate a great deal of the functionality of the EyeTV lineup for the Mac, including the ability to pause/rewind/record live TV and receive certain kinds of radio transmissions. The best part is this setup will not consume any mobile data whatsoever; the TV signals come in directly through the antenna accessory, so you don't even need to be connected to the internet to watch live TV on your iPad 2.

There are some caveats to the EyeTV Mobile rig. First is the price: €99.95 / ?99.95 (US price unavailable) may be a bit steep for many people's wallets. According to the product's tech specs, it only supports standard definition channels, and its lack of support for Freeview HD suggests it will be of limited utility where I live. The product is also only compatible with the iPad 2; owners of the iPhone, iPod touch, and original iPad are out of luck.

That having been said, if you've been looking for a no-fuss way to watch TV on your iPad that doesn't involve hooking up a bunch of different devices and streaming over Wi-Fi or 3G, EyeTV Mobile might work for you if your terrestrial TV channels broadcast a compatible signal. There's no word on a release date yet (Engadget says late September), but when it's released we'll see if we can get hold of a review unit.

Barnes & Noble: e-book sales quadruple, stores still losing

Barnes & Noble on Tuesday reported spring results that heralded a major spike in its digital efforts. Its "digital content" sales, led almost exclusively by e-books and magazines, quadrupled in just the past year. Even orders of physical goods through its website were up 37 percent to $198 million, as many were buying Nook Colors or the 2011 Nook redesign....

Comex, the Hacker Behind JailbreakMe.com, Hired as Apple Intern

Comex, the hacker behind JailbreakMe.com, is joining Apple as an intern. JailbreakMe.com made it extremely easy for iOS users to jailbreak their devices simply by visiting a website. He announced the hiring on Twitter:
It's been really, really fun, but it's also been a while and I've been getting bored. So, the week after next I will be starting an internship with Apple.
Forbes unmasked Comex as Nicholas Allegra, a 19-year old Brown University student from Chappaqua, NY, by Forbes. In that article, Allegra described jailbreaking as "like editing an English paper... You just go through and look for errors. I don?t know why I seem to be so effective at it."

Allegra's latest jailbreak utilized an exploit in Apple's PDF renderer to run custom software to crack iOS devices. Apple patched the bug after little more than a week, but the elegant solution, and the complete ease with which it allowed users jailbreak their phones, illustrate the talent that Allegra has.

The Forbes article ended by wondering if Apple's security team needs a new intern. It seems that they do, though Allegra didn't specify what he will be working on at Apple.

This isn't the first time Apple has hired from the jailbreak community. Earlier this year MobileNotifier developer Peter Hajas was picked up as an Apple summer intern. Unlike Hajas, however, Allegra has actually been responsible for some of the tools that have made jailbreaking possible on the iPhone.
