Make a more obvious low battery warning

I once owned a ThinkPad T60 series and when the battery in it became critically low it would beep wildly and make its low battery status very well known (impossible to ignore) and forced me to do something about it.

I am distracted easily, and when focused on other things, I tend to completely ignore that little warning window and the tiny alert noise that comes with it that Mac OS X presents me when my battery is low. I have created an AppleScript and developed a method to get a similar effect on my Mac laptop. Paste the following contents into the AppleScript Editor and save the script to: /etc/batteryScript.applescript. [crarko adds: You may first need to save the file to your Desktop and then copy it to the hidden /etc directory after using the Finder 'Go to Folder...' command.] ...

10.6: Enable AutoAnswer in FaceTime for the Mac

Snow Leopard only hintMy previous solution to auto answering FaceTime calls involved AppleScript, which required 'Access to assistive devices' to be enabled. I thought this method , while it worked, was too cumbersome, so I began to dig into FaceTime to find a way around the whole AppleScript approach. I fired up the Terminal to start hacking away at FaceTime.

I ran the command:

strings /Applications/FaceTime.app/Contents/MacOS/FaceTime

and, to my surprise I found two little preference strings of text called AutoAcceptInvites and AutoAcceptInvitesFrom.

It turns out that Apple has included the ability to auto answer FaceTime calls, and not only that, but AutoAnswer calls only from callers you specify. I wish I would have checked for these strings a month ago.

Open up the Terminal.app located in your /Appli ...

Ouch! Consumer Reports slams the Verizon iPhone 4

Not the most breathtaking revelation, but Consumer Reports won't put the Verizon iPhone 4 on its list of recommended smartphones. The Verizon iPhone joins the AT&T model in earning the ad-free publication's lack of enthusiasm.

The problems cited are the same as those that led to the original criticism of the GSM iPhone 4. Put a finger on the gap between antennas and the signal drops. In at least once instance, where there was a low signal, a call couldn't be placed while the gap was covered.

Other items of note involved voice quality. On the Verizon version, CR finds the voice quality superior when you make a call from it, but the testers thought the audio quality on received calls was better on the AT&T model.

Consumer Reports says most iPhone cases alleviate the antenna gap problem, but they are not about to recommend either phone. Apple had offered free cases to iPhone 4 buyers after the controversy last year, but that program has been discontinued. Apple has stated it will provide cases if customers experience issues.

Why I?ll Pass On This MacBook Pro Update

Today saw the release of refreshed MacBook Pro notebooks, and the new models aren't without charm. Despite some impressive spec bumps, and the brand new Thunderbolt port, this generation ends up leaving me cold, although it does plenty to whet my appetite for what's coming next.

Follow-up: One third of AAPL shareholders voted for CEO plan

New details have emerged regarding the defeat of a proposal by the Laborers' International Union (LiUNA) we covered yesterday. The proposal, which asked -- but did not require -- Apple to publish a plan for picking a new CEO in the event of a vacancy garnered roughly 172 million votes versus 400 million against, and was the only shareholder proposal not to pass, reports The Wall Street Journal. Due to public confusion about whether the proposal actually called for identifying candidates and the methods used to qualify them, it is possible that the measure, which was...

CDMA iPhone 4 may land on China Telecom in June

Chinese news sites are reporting that China Telecom has overcome technical challenges with the CDMA iPhone 4 and is prepared to launch the handset as early as June. Details were sparse, but engineers have reportedly developed a workaround for the lack of a SIM slot in the CDMA iPhone 4.

Available from Verizon Wireless, the CDMA iPhone does not support a SIM card because the US wireless carrier does not use the cellular technology in its handsets. China Telecom requires a SIM card, which poses a problem with the CDMA iPhone 4. As proof of their achievement, China Telecom employees in the Guangdong branch have posted pictures of the CDMA iPhone 4 with full 3G signal on China Telecom's network.

Previous posting from this Guangdong group boast that the iPhone 4 has made its first official phone call on China's #3 wireless carrier. The Xinhua News Agency, the official press agency of the government of the People's Republic of China, reiterates this report and suggests the CDMA iPhone will be available in June. Much of this information is obtained from unofficial sources, and China Telecom has not commented on these rumors, though the carrier has indicated in the past it is interested in carrying the CDMA iPhone 4.

Apple is interested in the Chinese market and is expecting to open up to 25 new stores in China over the next several years. Apple is reportedly looking to open a new store on Shanghai's very popular and very busy Nanjing Road. This retail outlet will become China's fifth Apple store and will be the largest one in China thus far.

Another way to enter special characters

Today I saw a hint on using AppleScript and Automator to enter special symbols into a document.

That is fine if you need only a few special symbols, but I am a meteorology student, and almost every equation has almost every Greek symbol. Apple allows software re-mapping of keys, which you can do by hand, but there is also an application for doing that.

A freeware program called Ukelele gives you the option to do whatever you wish to your keyboard. All you have to do is click on a key on the screen then use the special characters window to enter in whatever symbol you want. It's tedious but once completed you don't have to change it again.

Unless you change the US keyboard, it is best to make a new keyboard, which you can then switch between in the menu bar as long as you check 'Show Input menu in menu bar' in System Preferences &r ...

Happy Birthday, Steve Jobs

steve jobsWhile there has been a lot of Apple news today, we can't forget that one of the founders of the company, Steve Jobs, has a birthday. Yep, Steve turns 56 today, and health concerns aside we hope he has a great one.

Over the years he's had a profound influence on our daily lives. From revolutionizing the computer industry to unleashing the creatitve power of Pixar to re-inventing Apple and making it a powerhouse of consumer electronics innovation, Mr. Jobs has almost been a national spokesperson for innovation and good design. A savvy businessman and astute judge of what works and what doesn't when it comes to user-centric design, I think we all owe Steve a debt of gratitude for his uncompromising character and attention to detail.

On the next page there's a YouTube tribute video that is short but sweet, plus a few links to some other videos of Steve throughout the years. Happy birthday, Mr. Jobs!
